GLEN ELLYN, IL — Traditional Fourth of July celebrations and fireworks shows throughout Glen Ellyn have been canceled due to the new coronavirus. A new contest plans to paint the village red, white and blue with decorations at homes and storefronts.

Amy Keating, a 4th of July Committee Member, said in a news release, “Just as many families drive around neighborhoods to view holiday lights during the Christmas season, we want to provide the same experience for the 4th of July, to commemorate those who served even though we can’t be together in person. To add to the celebration, the committee will be judging the displays and awarding prizes, so make sure to register online now.”

Homes and storefronts must register for the contest by June 26 to be considered. The three categories are Most Patriotic, Most Creative and Best Overall.

Prizes for homes entered in the contest include boat dock tickets for the Labor Day fireworks show, tickets to Frida Kahlo 2021 and more. Winning stores will get signage and publicity, according to the news release.

A map of the homes entered in the contest will be posted the week of June 28. The village’s 4th of July Committee will announce the winners July 3.
