The name brown goods have been derived from the fact that these kind of products were often housed in brown wooden cabinets. Some types of goods were often traditionally finished with wood or Bakelite.
However the service areas of these major and small appliances vary in a broad way. Where brown goods involve high technical knowledge and skills, white goods require mainly practical skills and “brute force” for manipulating the devices. Heavy tools are required to repair them.
As the major appliances have now become a general need for every household and the market growing competitive, the manufacturers are now combining style with durability. The white goods are now available in plastic, shining finish. They are available in vast color range also. Steel Grey, shiny black, red, blue are some common colors that are available in white goods.

The first and foremost thing that attracts consumer’s attention while purchasing any electrical equipment is the level providing longer warranty period. The labels should come with the life-cycle costs of products. It indicates that the consumer has potential savings over the lifetime of the purchased product. Thus the policy must work with retailers for promotion of the life costs of products rather than purchasing price of the good.
